outreach committee. >> that is good direction on the intent. >> commissioner yee riley? >> i have a question. now when we asked a recycling center to close, do we have any plan to meet the need of that community? >> i have been working with both with existing supermarkets, in discussions with them and with other -- basically it's looking for land. or looking for a parking lot or vacant space, in the case of the hank center, to try to find some locations for either a temporary or a mobile or a permanent site. this is the first situation like this that we have faced where we had sort of enough warning to get something going. like for instance, at the california and hyde situation we didn't really know what was happening and it stalled and started up again. so the short answer is that we don't have a process in place for that. we activated one in this case. >> i think it would help if we had a process in place. that way on the other hand we need a recycling center and on the other hand we want to close them. >> there is a bit of schizophrenia there. >> the $100, who sets that l
the three state senators, senator de leon, state senator leland yee and state senator ted gains, all three of which are sponsoring some five different pieces of state legislation aimed at banning assault weapons and munitions, getting higher levels of background checks and registries, and also i think senator gains is attempting to also make sure that those that have backgrounds of mental health challenges are lifetime bans of possessing these weapons. again, in an attempt to do what we can. in san francisco, we tried to ban assault weapons some years ago. we were unsuccessful in the courts in being able to do so. we are going to renew these efforts in light of the sandy hook sentiment and i know there's just a higher level of sentiment that causes us to focus even more on what we can do locally. in fact, this higher level of sentiment, as you'll hear from the police chief, has even caused one of the highest rates of gun return. certainly we paid some money for that, but he's going to tell you there are some individuals out there, in light of sandy hook, that returned their guns and withou
